New York - Our Type of Town!
Our design team just returned from an inspiration trip to New York (the lucky dogs!) And you can bet that in the coming months, they are going to go wild with new takes on typography. "From a typography standpoint, visiting New York is like a clothing designer going to Fashion Week," says Gail Pierce-Watne. "To be there is visual heaven; it's the mecca of graphic design. Their work is everywhere: on store windows, signage, shoot, even the subway maps have some superstar design component. Everything seems to inspire." Until the ladies come out with their new goods, following are some inspiring ideas to hold you over.

We're so conditioned to personalizing our home space, it's not often we think about personalizing the gear that we haul with ourselves every day.

Here's one company that is taking personalization beyond the home: Adafruit Industries is a NYC company that laser-etches designs, names, quotes, or anything that suits your fancy, into any of your tech gadgets. Then again, why outsource a task like that (which can cost upwards of $100 a pop) when you can do it yourself.

Making Memories' own Wordage Rub-Ons are not just for traditional craft projects. Try personalizing your laptop, iPod, cell phone, or other take-along technology using these versatile embellishments. Best of all you can re-create the effect for 1/100th of the cost!

Christy Tomlinson, one of our beloved designers, is also considered the "queen" of typography. We asked her to share some insight about mixing fonts, and she offered the following:

"When I mix type on a page, I love to mix different styles of fonts, serif with sans and also script with type font. I also try to mix different sizes of fonts because it give the eye more to look at. One thing though, when I mix fonts, I try to stick in one color scheme. Often times there is so much going on from the different fonts, that if you mix colors, it's almost too much.

Another fun tip is to try mixing different kinds of mediums when mixing fonts: like stamps, stickers, rub-ons etc. This also adds different textures and creates more depth to your page!"
